This week in Ms. Spires and Ms. Ratcliff's chemistry classes the students conducted a Flame Test Lab, an engaging experiment where they were able to see different colors produced by heating various elements.
The students enjoyed seeing the science come alive and were able to directly observe how this principle is applied in real-world contexts such as fireworks, neon signs, and even forensic investigations. It was a great hands-on learning experience that connected abstract ideas about electrons and energy to something colorful, memorable, and practical.
If you enjoy science and want to better understand this concept here is the science behind this activity: when a chemical compound is heated, the electrons absorb energy and move to higher energy levels. As they fall back to their normal state, they release that energy as light. Each element has its own unique electron arrangement, so each produces a specific color—almost like a fingerprint. For example, sodium produces a bright yellow flame, potassium shows violet, and strontium gives off red.
