Parents-

All second-grade students in South Carolina participate in the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) and Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) assessments during the month of October. Students will be taking these tests during the 2 weeks following fall break.
The primary purpose of these assessments is to identify potential students for academically gifted and talented programs. The results of these assessments provide important information regarding the individual learning needs of each student. The tests include aptitude (verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal), achievement in reading comprehension, and achievement in mathematics concepts and problem solving. The CogAT measures aptitude and the ITBS is a measure of student achievement.

Most young children have had little or no experience with standardized tests and, therefore, do not have any preconceived notions, either positive or negative, about testing. There is no need to be anxious about the testing. Students can be reminded that the teacher will use the results to better understand each student’s progress. No special preparation is required of students beyond getting a good night’s sleep and having a nutritious breakfast.
Parents will receive a summary of test results in early 2026 and prior to the end of the school year will be notified about potential qualification for gifted and talented programs.
Thank you in advance for your support and if you should have any questions or require further or more specific information, please contact the school.

FALL INTERSESSION CODING CAMP | GRADES 3-5

During Fall Intersession, the week of September 29–October 2, a limited number of spots are available for this year’s Coding Camp for students in grades 3–5.

Coding Camp will be held at Mossy Creek Elementary School, Monday–Thursday, 8:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. Students will get a fun, hands-on introduction to coding and problem-solving through activities such as Sphero robots, drones, 3D printing, Makey-Makey, and more.

Registration opens Wednesday, September 10, at 4 p.m. for ACPSD elementary students in grades 3-5 and is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. How It Works:

Happy Friday! As we begin the new school year, we are always trying to make sure our morning and afternoon arrival and dismissal procedures keep our staff, students and families safe. We appreciate your help with the following:
For carline:
• There are 2 lanes to exit, after pole one. Choose a lane either left or right, do not stay in the middle.
• No cell phone. • Do not pass cars in the car line, unless instructed to do so by a school staff member.
• Students must enter and exit from the passenger side of your vehicle. When they have to enter or exit from the driver's side, that puts them and others at risk.
• Do not exit your vehicle in carline. Allow safety patrol or school staff to assist in loading/ unloading your student.
• (Mornings and afternoons) Pull all the way up to the car in front of you. Especially at poles 1 through 5. (We are trying to get five cars in front of the brick wall.)
• (Mornings) Be ready to get out. Unbuckled and have backpack, lunch box, water bottle and everything ready to get out.
• (Mornings) Do not try to ride alongside your child. It is dangerous.
• (Afternoons) Please display your number from your rearview mirror, at all times, from the beginning to the end of Carline until after your child is in.
Also, if you are choosing to walk from the back of the school in the afternoons to pick up in the carline, you MUST park in the back parking lot, not along the curb near the bus area. Please do not pull past the bus loop and enter the area outside the cafeteria near the dumpsters. This is a safety concern in our bus loading area.
