As twins, MVHS students Lawrence and Logan Valdez do a lot together. And that won’t be changing when they graduate later this month. Both were among the 25 winners of $7,500 scholarships from the Rotary Club of Aiken on May 5, and both plan to attend Georgia Tech.
Being a twin is like having “a built-in best friend,” Lawrence said. Consequently, as freshmen at Georgia Tech, “we’ll [both] already have a best friend, so that will be helpful,” Logan said.
They both would like to major in mechanical engineering.
“I like making things and figuring things out,” Lawrence said. “I hopefully also will be going for a minor in finance and/or business.”
Logan is interested in mechatronics. “Its like a mix between mechanical and electrical [engineering] and a little computer science,” he said. Logan added that he doesn’t want to “just stick with the physical” because “these days, I feel like everything is moving toward electronics and AI (artificial intelligence). They’re the future.”
The twins both have jobs at the QuickTrip convenience store in Graniteville and prior to that, they were Wingstop employees in North Augusta.
Logan thanked his father for pushing both him and Lawrence to succeed. “He never went to high school, and he had us [when he was] very young,” Logan said. “We always have worked really hard, and I feel like we got that from him. He would always tell me, ‘Go to school. Get good grades.’ That just clicked, and I’m glad I followed his advice.”
