Ms. Widener's Algebra II classes debated two methods of polynomials. The class was split into three different groups: Team Synthetic Division, Team Long Division, and Jury. At the end of the day, Team Long Division took the majority win of 2 to 3 with synthetic only having a win in one block. Here are pictures of the students as well as a great closing statement from Tyler Finch in 4th Block.
"Let’s be honest: synthetic division is like the IKEA furniture of math techniques. It promises efficiency, but only if you follow a cryptic set of instructions and don’t lose a single screw (or sign). Sure, it’s faster than long division — if you’re dividing by a linear factor like x-4. But the moment your divisor gets fancy, synthetic division just shrugs and says, “Yeah… I don’t do that.”
It’s so stripped down it feels like math on mute. No variables, no context, just a conveyor belt of numbers sliding past while you hope you didn’t miss a minus sign. Blink wrong, and the whole thing collapses like a house of cards built on a shaky foundation.
For students trying to actually understand what’s going on, synthetic division is like skipping the movie and reading the spoiler. You get the answer, but none of the plot. It’s slick, sure — but slick like a banana peel. Fast, but not forgiving. And definitely not intuitive unless you already speak fluent polynomial.
So while synthetic division might look cool in a speed-run, it’s hardly the hero of mathematical clarity. More like the sidekick who shows up late, forgets the algebra, and leaves you wondering why you didn’t just use long division in the first place. "

The North Augusta Wrestling team will begin preseason practice on the mats starting Tuesday, September 2 at the Rec Center, gym 2 from 4-6 after school. Practices will be Mon-Thur each week in September. If you plan on joining the wrestling team this season, you will need a physical and all the forms necessary. They can all be found on the NA website under Athletics. This is for both boys and girls in grades 7-12. It's a great opportunity to try out the sport before the official season starts. If you have any questions, contact the head coach, Matt Franklin at

Dr. Ball and Mr. Green’s students of the month for August are Madeline Howze, Brody Shobert, and Nathan Seawright. All three of these students work really hard in class, but they also go above and beyond to work within their groups to help those around them. They show dedication to not only their education but education as a whole being a model student.
