NAHS Varsity Ladies win SC DNR State Trap Championship

The North Augusta High School Clay Target Team made history at the recent SC DNR State Trap Championships this past weekend in Eastover with the Varsity Ladies winning the first varsity ladies’ state championship in the 10-year history of the program.

The Ladies’ squad of Ellie Williams, EvieJo Rick, and Emma Sherman claimed the state Trap title by 9 broken targets (225 out of 300) over second place Wilson Hall  (216).  Hilton Head Christian Academy (211), Conway HS (204), Pee Dee Academy (183), SC Governor’s School for Agriculture (165), and South Aiken Baptist (165) were also in the field but just couldn’t outshoot the Lady Jackets on the day.

Junior Ellie Williams also captured the individual state title breaking 87 of 100 clays to lead the squad to the top spot on the podium.

This was the first DNR championship event of 100 targets (all previous events were 50 targets) and as the field began to fade in the late rounds, the NA Ladies made their run.   With just 15 targets to go and the championship in the balance, the NA Ladies provided their best sequence of the rotation, breaking 12 of 15 targets to seal the title.  They didn’t blink, kept their steady pace, and pulled away just at the end to earn the state crown.

Winning titles is nothing new to this group as they have won numerous SC DNR state titles at PKMS and as part of the NAHS JV squad in previous seasons.  SC DNR competitors beware, all three students are Juniors and will be back next season.

The NAHS Ladies will next look to sweep the DNR championships this season as Williams, Sherman, and Britton Breazeale will be shooting for the Skeet title on April 18.  The event will be held at the SC DNR State Shooting Complex in Eastover, SC.

A huge shout out to Mr. Wimberly and the entire NAHS Clay Target program!
