Students from across Aiken County Public Schools gathered for the first ever ‘Roll and Stroll’ event by the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department (SCVRD) on Thursday, October 15.
The Roll and Stroll brought together Vocational leaders from around South Carolina with several Aiken County Middle and High School students in special programs who participated in a pep rally and short parade around SRP Park on the North Augusta Greeneway.
“Today’s event reminds us that every individual has unique talents, abilities and contributions to share. It’s an opportunity to celebrate those strengths, encourage one another, and recognize all that our students can accomplish,” Assistant Superintendent of Special Programs Beth Taylor shared.
Students from Midland Valley High School’s drumline and North Augusta High School’s cheerleading squad made appearances to welcome conference and student attendees.
“We could not do this without your partnership and support for us in supporting these wonderful and incredible students that we are here to support in their education and more importantly, their transition out of high school and into employment,” Felicia Johnson, Commissioner of SCVRD said.
Wagener-Salley High School alum, former SCVRD consumer, and Southern Soul musician Douglas Furtick, known as ‘803 Fresh’, served as the Grand Marshall for the event. Furtick also shared his journey and experience with state Vocational Rehabilitation leaders during a panel interview session following the Roll and Stroll.
Thank you to all Aiken County Public Schools participants in this inaugural event! ACPSD is proud to partner with SCVRD to prepare students with disabilities for independence and successful employment outcomes and a bright future.
