AIKEN — Days after her death on Aug. 25, thousands are remembering and honoring country music singer and songwriter Dolly Parton, whose charisma, talent and vast philanthropic efforts made her beloved across the nation and globally.
Parton was 80 years old when she died in Nashville, Tenn.
The Aiken County Public School District recently shared that in the early 1970s, she made a stop in Aiken County.
The Aiken County Public School District also spoke about Parton and her impact, especially on childhood literacy through the establishment of her Imagination Library program which provides free books to children up until their fifth birthday.
“Dolly’s extraordinary legacy extended far beyond the stage,” the district said in its Facebook post. “Through her Imagination Library, she helped place free books in the hands of children from birth to age 5, inspiring a love of reading among generations of younger learners here in Aiken County and around the world. We join countless others in honoring Dolly Parton’s remarkable life and enduring legacy of music, generosity and love for children.”
The Aiken County Public School District is asking anyone who attended the North Augusta High School performance to consider sharing their memories or photos by emailing them to communications@acpsd.net.
