NORTH AUGUSTA - For most of Al Young’s youth, everything revolved around football, but as an adult, he found a second passion in coaching basketball.
And that passion led him to eventually lead the North Augusta girls’ basketball team to seven state championships throughout the last decade to become one of the most successful coaches in the school’s history.
Now he’s beginning a third phase, one away from sports as he enters retirement for a second, and final, time.
“Growing up, football was everything to me,” he said. “When I first started coaching, football was too, but I've learned to love coaching basketball. It's just different. It's a quick game. Things happen real fast, and I just love it. I've enjoyed it so much, and to watch our kids grow and develop has been very, very special to me. And I just feel so good that I've been able to be a part of all this and be around this. It's been so, so good to me. And I feel so blessed.”

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WFXG) – A local high school basketball coach is going out as a champion.
Al Young is retiring as the basketball coach at North Augusta High School, with over 20 years and a handful of championships to his name.
Young, whose 22-year career at NAHS was punctuated by five 4A state titles in seven years for the girls’ basketball team, says the lessons he’s tried to teach his players extend well beyond the court.
