South Aiken High School hosted South Carolina Commission on High Education's (CHE) first event in the state this season, in which representatives from multiple universities such as Winthrop, Paine College, USC Aiken, Aiken Tech and Lander spoke about their institutions and helped seniors fill out applications.
During College Application Month, which runs from August to November, students have the chance to take advantage of waived application fees.
According to South Aiken High’s Principal Sam Fuller, 190 students signed up to participate in the event. “I just love to see them finding ways to be successful,” he said.
Kathy Rollins, the commission’s college access program manager and a first-generation college student herself, said she’s passionate about helping students explore the possibilities of higher education.
“I feel like there are so many times in our lives that we don’t know what the opportunities are because nobody’s ever presented them to us. And so I feel like it’s important for everybody to know that they have that opportunity,” she said.
“The knowledge and the people that you meet, it broadens your horizons,” she said about the advantages of attending college. “It expands your mind, and I think that that’s so important for people to be able to experience that versus them not getting the education, not being able to experience that,” she said.
