AIKEN — Martha Messick, principal of Aiken Scholars Academy, has received state-wide recognition for her role in fostering student leadership.

Messick was named Administrator of the Year by the South Carolina Association of Student Councils, a nonprofit established in 1948 with the mission of developing student leadership, good citizenship, and cooperation among the student councils of South Carolina and serving as an incentive for the organization of more student councils.

Aiken Scholars Academy is an Aiken County Public School District high school located on the campus of USC Aiken. Founded in 2018 with an initial cohort of 50 students, the school offers an accelerated learning program for gifted students who take Advanced Placement courses in ninth and 10th grades and college courses at USC Aiken in 11th and 12th grades.

Messick was recognized at the June 10 meeting of the Aiken County Board of Education.

Two awards were presented by Dr. Gary Senn, director of the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center at USC Aiken.

Amanda Waymer, who teaches science and Advanced Placement research at Aiken Scholars Academy, received the Spirit of Ruth Patrick award “in recognition of her passion for teaching and infusing a love for science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” Senn said.

Senn presented the center’s Robert E. Alexander Administrator of the Year award to Oakwood-Windsor Elementary School principal Davina Truitt “in recognition of her support of science and mathematics education.”
