Students, Community To March Saturday For School Safety, End To Gun Violence

By Larry Wood/The Aiken Standard

Aiken County high school and college students and local residents will march through downtown Aiken on Saturday to bring awareness to the issue of gun violence and school safety in America.

The March for Our Lives will begin at 10 a.m. at the Aiken County Courthouse at 109 Park Ave. S.E. From there, participants will walk about a block to Newberry Street for a program that will include speeches by students from Aiken High, Silver Bluff High, USC Aiken and other Aiken County schools.

The Aiken march will coincide with the national March for Our Lives in Washington, D.C., and in towns and cities across America.

The marches grew out of a student-led movement calling for school safety and stricter gun control after the school shooting Feb. 14 in Parkland, Fla., that killed 17 high school students and teachers.

More than 800 marches are planned worldwide, according to the website event.marchforourlives.com.

According to the website, “On March 24, the kids and families of March For Our Lives will take to the streets to demand that their lives and safety become a priority, and that we end gun violence in our schools and communities.”
