Although they're still in elementary school, young artists from the East Aiken School of the Arts are displaying their best works at the college level.
Art students from the school recently opened a six-month rotating art show in USC Aiken's Student Activities Center, near Starbucks.
East Aiken School of the Arts’ visual arts teacher Tamara Smith, who just wrapped up her first year on campus, came up with the idea to partner with USCA for the show.
Smith and other members of the school selected the artwork of several standout student artists in grades K-5. Art pieces were selected based on a detailed project rubric and the individual artisanship of the students themselves.
"We are very excited for our students to have the opportunity to have their artwork be displayed so prominently at USC Aiken," Smith said. “This is a huge accomplishment that will allow our students to experience a college campus and also help them build the foundation for their visual art portfolio. We absolutely love showing off our students' work in the community, and we are grateful for this partnership with USC Aiken."
Lisa Fallaw, the principal of East Aiken School of the Arts, said the elementary arts integration magnet school is committed to giving its students as many community-based arts experiences as possible.
“We believe community involvement is essential to educating the whole child,” she said. “We are very thankful to USC Aiken for partnering with us and giving our students the opportunity to have their art work displayed in the community, especially on a college campus. This is an experience our students will never forget.”
