The Buzz on Boys' Soccer

North Augusta's soccer team's leaders helped the Yellow Jackets to a region championship and are also well represented on the Aiken Standard's All-Area Boys Soccer Team.

North Augusta has four players who earned spots, more than any other school. Kyle Newbegin, who was named Region 4-AAAA Player of the year earned a spot on the team. He's joined by Jacob Withers, Eric Smiley and Edgar Perez, who were all members of the All-Region team as well.

Silver Bluff's Luis Florido was named the Aiken Standard Player of the year, and the Bulldogs are also represented by Oscar Lopez on the All-Area team. Region 5-AA Player of the Year Shane Poplin (Barnwell) scored 10 goals and had six assists. He was also a versatile player who made the move to forward from defender because the team needed him to.

South Aiken's Duncn Mihoulides and Alex Kiefer were also named All-Region and are the Thoroughbreds representatives on the team. Aiken High's Kyle Frei, Eric Wertz and Keegan Grant also earned a spot on the All-Area team. Frei led the team with 15 goals.

Ridge Spring-Monetta's Melvin Alewine was the only player from the area to be named to the All-State team. He's also the only player from a Class A school to make the All-Area team.
