Following the Aiken County Board of Education’s regularly scheduled meeting held Tuesday evening, December 11, Aiken County Public Schools announced a pair of administrative changes that have been approved for the 2019-20 school year.
Scott Floyd, current principal at Aiken Middle School, will serve as principal of Schofield Middle School in 2019-20, while current Schofield Middle School Principal Denise McCray will serve as principal of the new Aiken Intermediate School. Floyd and McCray will complete the 2018-19 school year in their current positions.
“We are very proud of the hard work and passion Mr. Floyd and Mrs. McCray have poured into their respective school communities at Aiken Middle and Schofield Middle, and we look forward to their respective leadership of both Schofield Middle and Aiken Intermediate School,” commented Aiken County Superintendent Dr. Sean Alford.
Aiken County Board of Education members approved Floyd as principal of Aiken Middle School in December of 2015. He has served in that role three years after moving to Aiken County from the Charleston area.
“This is a great opportunity and I am really excited about leading Schofield Middle and potential implementation of elements of the Cambridge Program curriculum at the middle school level,” stated Floyd. “I am also excited to be able to continue the relationships already developed with the sixth and seventh grade students and their families at Aiken Middle, while developing new relationships with students at Schofield Middle I will meet for the first time.”
Floyd says while he will miss the unique atmosphere at “The Swamp” he also looks forward to embracing the tradition of Schofield Middle School.
“It’s been a great experience at Aiken Middle and a great ride,” Floyd added. “I will miss ‘The Swamp’ and the family environment we built as a staff with our Aiken Middle parents. I look forward to learning more about Schofield Middle’s tradition and continuing the success there.”
McCray, a former Aiken County Public Schools teacher, was approved as principal of Schofield Middle in April of 2017. She has served in that role for two years.
“It’s bittersweet because this is my first middle school experience as a principal and I truly love the students and faculty at Schofield Middle,” commented McCray. “However, we will be developing students to transition to Schofield Middle and Kennedy Middle so we will be focused on collaboration with both of those schools and our elementary feeder schools. I very much look forward to inviting my former Schofield students to visit Aiken Intermediate School and speak with those students about what the middle school experience is all about.”
McCray says embracing such a unique challenge as creating a new educational experience for students is something she eagerly anticipates during the 2019-20 school year.
“We will have a great opportunity to have an impact on all students in city of Aiken and usher them into their middle school years with a positive experience,” McCray added. “With my background at the elementary level and experience at the middle school level I understand what students and parents are going through during this transition. We will focus on building student confidence and developing the ability to advocate for themselves, and on being a bridge connecting all of the schools in the city of Aiken because we know we are more alike than we are different.”
