Wagener-Salley golf coach Parrish Deans told his players there were two things they could control heading into Monday's Class A state championship.
One was their attitude, and the other was their effort. That's where shots are dropped needlessly, and that's the kind of thing that could decide who wins the title and who's left thinking about what could have been.
The War Eagles gave Deans the performance he asked for. Wagener-Salley's team total of 360 strokes was seven clear of Lowcountry Leadership Charter School, and the War Eagles' golf program – in just its third year of existence – raised the state championship trophy at Indian Trail Golf Club in Batesburg-Leesville.
McBee (392) finished in third, followed by Lake View (394) and Great Falls (428). Ridge Spring-Monetta (454) finished seventh, and Williston-Elko (460) finished eighth.
Wagener-Salley was boosted by three All-State performances. Trey Romines led the way with a fourth-place finish, followed by Bryson Shealey in sixth and Clayton Hooker in 10th. Shealey and Romines were Region 3-A medalists last week, and they were joined on the All-Region team by Hooker and Jordan Widener.
Though it's still a fairly new program, Deans hasn't had trouble finding players. A roster of six in 2017 doubled last year, and this year the War Eagles were 10 deep.
