Retirees Honored

With a combined total of 1,354 years of service to the field of education, 55 Aiken County Public School employees were honored and celebrated at a retirement dinner held Monday, May 20 at 6:00 p.m. at Newberry Hall in downtown Aiken.

Among the retirees are Adult Education director Pat Keating and Oakwood Windsor Principal Lynne Shrader, with 30 and 41 years of service to K-12 students, respectively. Mrs. Shrader retires with the greatest number of years dedicated to education of all retirees for the 2018-19 school year.

The District will bid farewell to beloved teachers at every level, including Kathy Linton, East Aiken School of the Arts’ Physical Education Teacher who was a member of the 2015-16 Teacher of the Year Honor Court.

Also retiring is long-time Secretary to the Board of Education Vicky Durden and school counselor Jane Kaplenski.

Custodians who’ve impacted the lives of generations of students and helped to instill in our youth a pride in their work will soon mop a school cafeteria floor for the last time. Secretaries will cheerfully answer their last on the job phone call, bus drivers will safely transport students home on their last career route, and school food service workers will serve a healthy helping to their last students.

“Serving our community in the field of education is a noble calling.” District Superintendent Dr. Sean Alford commented. “We are grateful to each of these retirees for their dedication to our students and their families and certainly wish them the absolute best that retirement has to offer.”
