Graniteville Gators love math, and they love a little competition!  Students in the fourth and fifth grades at Graniteville Elementary School started preparing for the 2nd GVES 2024-2025 Math Bowl Competition in January.  Teams of students were formed, and the calculations began!  What started this?  The answer is Ms. Kay Crawford, fifth grade teacher.  Math is her favorite subject, and she wanted a fun way to encourage students to like math.  She also wanted to help them improve their skills and test scores.

To begin, teams had to make it through round one, the math fair.  The objective was for students to apply mathematical computations to solve real world applications and problem solving.  Much like a science fair, students worked together and created math boards and presentations.  The four highest scoring teams moved to round two.  The Linear Legends won with their project, Tiny Homes.  Round two had teams working equations to figure out break-out boxes.  The Linear Legends won round two!  The Math Bowl final was May 7, 2025.  Students competed to answer math questions correctly within a specific time limit.  The first-place winners were The Common Factors.  The team members are Jared Villa, Demetre Wright, Liam Hurd, Rady Hunter, Gabriel McDaniels, and Jaiden Williford.  The math coach is Mrs. Katie Craig, fifth grade teacher.

Graniteville Elementary hosted an elementary math bowl with Byrd Elementary School on May 14, 2025.  Three teams from Byrd Elementary competed against three teams from GVES.  The winner was our own team, The Linear Legends.  The team members are Emma Inman, Isaiah, Morris, Elias Rodriguez-Flores, Taylinn Steinmetz, Zoei DeGraw and Rue Garner.  The math coach is Coach Stephen Webb, physical education teacher.
