Welcome to Head Start and Early Head Start

    in Aiken and Barnwell counties

Head Start and Early Head Start programs are free, federally funded early childhood programs for families who qualify and are designed to promote school readiness for children from low-income families. Early Head Start serves pregnant women and families with children under age 3. Head Start programs serve children between 3 and 5 years old.

Aiken County Public School District provides services in school settings, licensed childcare centers, and in home-based settings. The Head Start/Early Head Start program approach is based on the philosophy that a child can benefit most from a comprehensive, interdisciplinary program that fosters development and involves the community. Comprehensive services include health, nutrition, education, and family services. To apply for Head Start, and Early Head Start, please contact the program serving your community.

Aiken County Public School District has partnered with Aiken County First Steps and Barnwell County First Steps to further expand Early Head Start services to children and families throughout both counties. For additional information, contact:

A Message From the Director

  • Welcome to Head Start/Early Head Start!

Aiken County Public School District has embarked upon a new journey with Head Start and Early Head Start and we are delighted that Aiken and Barnwell County’s children, families and communities will be a part of this remarkable journey!

The Head Start and Early Head Start staff are committed to getting young children ready to enter kindergarten and are excited to serve children and families.  Parents are a child’s first and most important teacher. To that end, we value and respect the roles of parents and will work together with parents in preparing them and their children for kindergarten and as we guide each child through each stage of growth development from ages birth to age five.  At Head Start and Early Head Start, we know that children learn through play.  Teachers’ instructions and lesson planning is intentionally designed to support the individual needs of all children, including those with disabilities.

Aiken County Public School District is honored parents have chosen this program and we will work diligently to provide each child and family with high-quality learning experiences in a safe and nurturing environment that promote school readiness.
