Genny D. Nelson, M.M.

A SC native, Genny Nelson began her violin studies at the age of 2.5 in Columbia. A graduate of the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities residential high school division, Nelson went on to pursue undergraduate degrees in violin performance and music education from Columbus State University. After finishing those degrees on a full scholarship, she then attained a master's degree in music education and musicology while in residency and as a graduate assistant at Louisiana State University.

A published author, respected presenter, and a sought-after clinician, Nelson strives to attain excellence and share her skills in various domains within music. She is an active professional violinist and violist, performing regularly with the Augusta Symphony, Aiken Symphony, Long Bay Symphony, Florence Symphony as well as several other regional organizations. She has performed as a cellist with several community orchestras including the Aiken Civic Orchestra, Palmetto Chamber Orchestra, and the Lake Murray Symphony.

Nelson has served the music education community in Georgia, South Carolina, and Louisiana for over 15 years. She has taught all ages and experience levels, and in a variety of settings ranging not only from the public school classroom, but also in collegiate settings, charter and private schools, and her private studio, Grace Notes Music Studio. Nelson opened GNMS in 2008 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and the studio grew to accommodate 12 staff members and over 180 students. The Louisiana studio, now under new ownership, continues to flourish as does the Aiken location she recently opened.

A happily-retired swim coach, Nelson maintains active participation in competitive swimming through USA Swimming's masters competitive circuit. Her other hobbies include: reading, keeping up with college and NFL football, enjoying all the performing arts, photography, writing, watching documentaries, organizing things and making lists. :)

Genny Nelson has been married to Neil Nelson, Director of Bands at South Aiken HS, for over 7 years. Together they have four internationally adopted children from Bulgaria. ‚ÄčAn avid animal-lover, Nelson is a fur-mom to five cats and two dogs.
