Mrs. Coleman

I am so excited to have your child in my classes this year! This is my first year as a related arts teacher, but it is my 10th year of teaching. I love being at JES. I teach Math and my class is the Math Accerlation Class or MAC for short. Math in our country is a critical low and my goal is to help your child build a love for mathematics. Our standards are a part of a strenuous curriculum, but we have seen students obtain a deeper understanding of the material. I often hear the term "new math". First, let me say, there is no such thing as new math. Math hasn't changed at all, but what has changed is the way we teach mathematics. You might wonder why. Afterall, you learned math the old way and you did just fine, right? Of course, but what we often don't realize is that today's children don't have the same experiences with numbers as we did. Think about it. How often do you put actually money in your child's hands? What about them reading an analog clock? Or sharing objects equally with friends? These things helped us build a solid sense of numbers, but our children don't have those same opportunities. That is one of the main reasons why math curriculum seems different to you. Our goal is help students build a conceptual understanding of mathematics so that they can apply their knowledge to other areas. A great deal of independence will be expected from your student this year and I will challenge them, but I also want them to see that mathematics is fun. Your child’s educational success is my top priority, so I am always available to help students on math concepts they are struggling with.

Jefferson is a wonderful family, but I also have my family at home. I am married with three fantastic children. My husband, Robert, works for Kimberly Clark. Our oldest child, Taylor, is a graduate from USCA with a Bachelors of Science in Psychology with a Neuroscience minor. She works for Augusta University as a Research Assistant in the Psychology Department. Our middle child, Kali, is a graduate of Winthrop University with a Bachelors of Arts in Mass Communications. She lives in New York City and is an Assistant Editor with Best Life Magazine. The youngest Coleman, Jaxen, is a junior Theatre major at USCA and works part time at UPS.  I am blessed to have fabulous work and home families.
