In addition, Career Specialist, Ms. Johnson will provide exciting ways to chart your path for high school and beyond.
Role of School Counselors
Middle school counselors “enhance the learning process and promote academic, career and social/emotional development. School counseling programs are essential for students to achieve optimal personal growth, acquire positive social skills and values, set informed career goals and realize full academic potential to become productive, contributing members of the world community” (ASCA, 2019).
Confidentiality
Because counseling is based on a trusting relationship between counselor and student, the school counselors will keep information confidential with some possible exceptions. School counselors may share information with parents/guardians, the child’s teacher, and/or administrators who work with the child on a need-to-know basis, so that we may better help the child as a team. Under the following circumstances, the school counselors as well as all school staff are required by law to share information with others.
-
Presenting information about harm to self or others. This will result in the appropriate risk assessment being conducted and parents being contacted.
-
Evidence or disclosure of abuse (physically, emotionally, and sexually) or neglect. These cases are legally required to be reported to DSS or law enforcement.
-
Threats to school security will result in appropriate risk assessments and a report to law enforcement.
If you have questions regarding confidentiality or the legal requirements to breach confidentiality, please contact your school counselors.
