Degrees and Certifications:

Jean Gorthy

Hi there! I went to college at Colorado State University, graduating with a BS degree in Vocational Home Economics Education, in 1986. I married Willis Gorthy that same year, and we moved to Summerville, SC, where I taught in Dorchester School District II in my early years as a teacher. We moved to Aiken in 1991 and I have taught at Aiken High ever since. Over the past 25 years I have developed a reputable Culinary Arts program, and in the process I earned a Certified Secondary Foodservice Educator Certificate from the National Restaurant Association in 2007. I was selected by the Education Foundation of the National Restaurant Association as the James Maynard Award Winner, the NRAEF's National Teacher of the Year, in 2004. I also earned my National Board Certification in 2009. Lastly, I was selected by my beloved colleagues to be Aiken High's 2014-15 Teacher of the Year.

Over the years, Aiken High culinary students have successfully competed in student organization competitions, earned industry certifications, participated in Service Learning and Work Based Learning opportunities, acquired employment and life skills, and had fun in my class!
