This year we will once again be utilizing the Unique Learning Curriculum ELEM (K-2) and INT (3-5) schedules. I am excited to inform everyone that this is the curriculum newly adopted by the state department of education for South Carolina for the second year. This Curriculum program alternates between a Science and a Social Studies theme each month. Within these themes we will do cross curricular study. This means our reading, writing, math, science and social studies will overlap within the unit and even within lessons.
We will supplement these themes with additional books within our theme or with seasonal/holiday book titles.
Typically our new unit will begin the week after our Early Release Wednesday. Books will be sent home after we have completed them so that you can add them to your child's home library. There are a few months that might merge with another unit due to holidays (Nov/Dec and Mar/Apr for example).
You may hear your child talking about Moe. Moe is a frog puppet utilized in our reading program. We will also be using the Edmark Reading programs as appropriate with each student.
We will use a "scaffolded" grading system for quizzes and other appropriate items. Basically this means your child will be given additional chances to answer a question with the wrong response removed. Points are awarded based upon the number of tries needed. Additionally, participation scores will be added to your child's grade for activities throughout the month.
Please let me know if you have any questions about our topics and curriculum.
