• My classroom is designed to promote independence. Throughout the school day, my students are expected to be attentive, work to the best of their abilities, and participate to the fullest extent possible. Students are held to high expectations and encouraged to work to reach their maximum potential on a daily basis. I have paraprofessionals who understand the diverse population of student needs within my classroom. The paraprofessionals will assist students with daily learning activities and tasks and encourage independence throughout the school day.

    Students will receive instruction in functional academic areas including: English Language Arts, Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

    Students will receive training and instruction in the following areas: Life Skills, Employment Skills, Transition Skills, Transition Options, Hygiene Skills, and Social Skills.

    Students will have opportunities to learn about their community during Community Based Instruction outings. Outings include:Field Trips, Project Unify Sporting Events, and Work-Site based opportunities (18-21 year old population).

    WSHS is a Project Unify School, therefore, students will participate in a Unified Partner Physical Education class which includes a student population made up of students with and without intellectual disabilities. Unified Partner P.E. is an opportunity for students to interact socially, competitively, and collaboratively with their peers. "Special Olympics Project UNIFY® is an education and sports based strategy powered by an engaged youth community that increases athletic and leadership opportunities for students with and without intellectual disabilities, while creating communities of acceptance for all."

    Student instruction is driven by individual needs and abilities determined by the IEP team. The functional academic curriculum was developed by the ACPSD Special Programs Curriculum Writing Team (a team that I was blessed to be apart of) and is derived from SC Alternative State Standards. Lessons will utilize a variety of materials and resources and will be adapted/modified to meet each individual students' needs.
